Welcome to our final eBulletin in 2022. This was a year filled with professional development opportunities, artist advisory support, awards, bursaries, public events, capacity building and more.
As the work of collaborative/ socially engaged artists continued to evolve through 2022, we were delighted to be able to support their work throughout the year and across the country.
Some particular highlights for the Create team were hosting our first ever in person Creative Places Tuam Ory’Sta conversation in Tuam, with Director of the Arts Council, Maureen Kennelly, Director of Heart of Glass (UK), Patrick Fox, and former Direct of Create, Ailbhe Murphy; partnering with Madrid-based hablarenarte on an international residency for a collaborative artist, and with Hugh Lane Gallery on a commission based in Dublin city; and of course, welcoming over 100 of you to Tuam as part of our Creative Places and Create Networking Event in November.
We welcomed our new Director Damien McGlynn in August, and look forward to 2023 refreshed after our Christmas break, and renewed in our dedication to enabling artists and communities to create exceptional art together.
Our work would not be possible without the support of our funders, the Arts Council, Dublin City Council, and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. We also wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to all partners who have worked with us during the year and our dedicated board members, as well, of course, as the committed socially engaged and collaborative artists and community members, who we are proud to support and work with on a daily basis.

Hugh Lane Gallery and Create commission recipient: Jijo Sebastian

Hugh Lane Gallery and Create are delighted to announce the successful recipient of this commission 2022 – 2024, filmmaker Jijo Sebastian.
Jijo Sebastian is a collaborative filmmaker with more than ten years of experience in participatory, collaborative and transcultural filmmaking in community-based contexts. He intends to use this commission opportunity to engage with families from diverse backgrounds in Dublin city, working collaboratively to make a film sharing stories happening in the liminal space between cultures, and communities. He will bring these families together into a common creative space where stories and experiences will be shared to generate connections across differences.
Hugh Lane Gallery and Create will support Jijo by facilitating an inclusive and intersectional creative axis where art making, co-production, learning and knowledge exchange are the principals on which the relationship between Jijo and the community is built, facilitating meaningful and in-depth engagement with the diverse communities of Dublin 1 and the wider Dublin City Council administrative area.
Create and hablarenarte International Residency Recipient: Tara Carroll

Create the national development agency for collaborative arts in Ireland and hablarenarte an independent platform based in Madrid, Spain that supports the creation, dissemination and promotion of contemporary arts and culture, are pleased to announce Irish artist Tara Carroll as the recipient of a Residency at Planta Alta in Madrid. Supported through the Arts Council of Ireland’s International Residency Initiatives Scheme, this is a one month fully funded Residency.
Tara Carroll is a visual artist whose collaborative art practice creates meaningful interactions for communities of interest to elevate their voices through artistic expression, infiltrating art spaces many find inaccessible. Her ambition is to invite older women in the area to an artistic workshop to share objects, rituals and folk beliefs of healing, to initiate dialogue and collective healing. This transnational research will benefit more nuanced discussions and enhance engagement with Tara’s community group in Ireland.
AIC Scheme Bursary Award 2022 Recipient (Collaborative Arts and Cultural Diversity): Rehan Ali
Create and the Irish Network Against Racism (INAR) are delighted to announce Rehan Ali as the recipient of the Artist in the Community Scheme Bursary Award 2022: Collaborative Arts and Cultural Diversity.
Originally from Pakistan, Rehan Ali moved to Ireland in 2005 at the age of 6. He would go on to spend ten and a half years in Bridgewater House, a Direct Provision centre in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary. He intends to use the time afforded by the bursary award to develop a film script with extensive research into the growth/progression of young people who grew up under the system of Direct Provision. He plans to document his ten years of childhood under Direct Provision and his journey of departing that system along with that of others in order to develop a film script capturing this relevant section of recent Irish history.

Join artists and printmakers Aoife Barrett and Kate O’Shea for a print workshop as part of their One Stop Shop print residency in Tuam.
Tuam is a town with a long history of print – the Tuam Herald has been in the town since 1837, and was once printed on a Gutenberg press, right in the centre of town! Learn more about printmaking, and share your Tuam. This will be a space for people to come together and share ideas, make work together and learn a new skill – printmaking!

Taking Root Fund, Creative Places Tuam

To further support the vital and valuable work that is happening in communities all over Tuam and its Hinterlands, Creative Places Tuam are offering a Taking Root Community Fund that can offer financial and mentoring support for “Good Ideas” that are taking root. This fund is to create opportunities for civic, social and community groups and individuals to take ideas further, grow resources and connect to communities further.
This fund, with support from Galway County Council Arts Office is now open, with a total sum of €20,000 available. Applications can be submitted for the minimum amount of €250 to the maximum amount of €2,000 as dependent on your needs and ambitions for the work.
Colour of My Breath

We are delighted to host Colour of My Breath on our website, following the launch at Networking Event 2022 – a film exploring the particular challenges of integration from the perspective of five leading collaborative/ community artists from minority ethnic/ migrant backgrounds.
Colour of my Breath was co-created by lead artist Jijo Sebastian, with collaborators Alessandra Azevedo, Hina Khan, Amir Abu Alrob, Mark Sebata and Tomasz Madajczak.
It is supported by the Communities Integration Fund from the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth. This project is also supported by Create and the Arts Council’s Artist in the Community Scheme.

Carlow Arts Festival, in partnership with VISUAL Carlow, are seeking a Creative Director to lead on the co-creation of the Carlow Carnival of Collective Joy in 2023. The Creative Director will work in collaboration with a choreographer and children aged between 8-12 years from across Carlow County to design and deliver this project. The role will be supported by the creative teams at both Carlow Arts Festival and VISUAL Carlow.

The Norman Houston Project is a new project that was initiated in 2022 by Solas Nua in Washington D.C. This Award is a bi-annual commission for a new work. This exciting opportunity is now open to artists working in any discipline on the island of Ireland. Individuals or small collectives are both eligible.
The commission will comprise of a six-week research and development residency in Washington D.C. on agreed dates between 12th June and 07th September 2023 with a studio at STABLE Arts, travel and private accommodation provided (in year one), followed by a presentation of the new work produced for the commission (in year two).

Cities Ahead is a European programme initiated by the Goethe-Institut that promotes the transformation of creative places. They are launching an open call for international creatives to propose participatory actions for the transformation of the public space, integrating aspects of urban innovation and sustainable/ecological development. This call aims to put the citizens of Logroño at the centre of the city’s future. By implementing a participatory artistic, activist or any other creative action in Logroño, the city will become a vivid marketplace for new ideas, tools and formats. The project puts the initiatives of artists, designers, activists and other creatives in dialogue with the citizens of Logroño.

SAC International Curatorial Residency Program 2023, Spain

SAC International Curatorial Residency Program 2023 is the residency program at Barcelona’s Sant Andreu Contemporani. They are announcing an open call for proposals to choose an international curator who will be part of the Miquel Casablancas Prize for the Visual Arts’ jury in 2023, and will later develop a curatorial project with a selection of catalan artists chosen from applicants to the prize. The project must be presented at the country of residence of the curator or in another international venue that she/he decides.
The purpose of the open call is to offer the curator personal knowledge of the art context through involvement in the jury of the Miquel Casablancas Prize, and to foster, in the context of young art talent, future collaborations between local and foreign cultural actors.

Housing Unlocked, Irish Architecture Foundation and The Housing Agency

How do we build affordable homes and resilient communities? How fast can we deliver low carbon homes? Can we increase housing density at the edges of cities? How can we use untapped potential to solve housing problems in our towns? Can towns and cities find extra housing in iconic buildings, church sites and vacant shops? How might we optimise quality of life in a compact urban block?
The installations in this exhibition propose creative and practical answers to these and related questions about housing in Ireland today. Each piece has been developed by a team of architects and their collaborators. Proposals were selected by a Jury of national and international experts through an Open Call process. The exhibition and programme are curated by the Irish Architecture Foundation.

An Urgent Enquiry: A Case Study is now available online
Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council and Wexford County Council are pleased to announce the publication of this new case study in commissioning public art, available to download for free from the programme website.
This guide documents the process, learning and outcomes of a public art programme which ran from 2017-2020 across the three local authorities, in which artists, scientists, biodiversity experts, and local interest groups collaborated, building local, national and international networks. This collaboration resulted in a series of think tanks, artists’ residencies and multiple public art outcomes, all of which explored the pertinent theme of climate change and biodiversity.
