Damien McGlynn appointed as Director of Create

Create is pleased to announce the appointment of Damien McGlynn as Director of the organisation.
Damien has worked in the cultural sector across Ireland, the UK and Europe for 15 years. He is currently the Ireland Director of Creative Lives, where he has managed major public engagement projects such as Creative Places: Edenderry and the Get Creative Festival, while also playing a leading role in a number of Creative Europe and Erasmus+ projects. Prior to this, he was part of the ARTIST ROOMS team at Tate and National Galleries of Scotland, delivering youth engagement projects across the UK as part of a touring collection of work. Damien was born in Dublin and studied Fine Art (Sculpture) at the National College of Art & Design. He is a trustee of Waterford Healing Arts Trust as well as Engage and Sydenham Arts in the UK.
Commenting on Damien’s appointment, chair of the board Clodagh Kenny said “Following a rigorous recruitment process, we are delighted to welcome Damien to Create. He is coming to a strong and resilient organisation with a clear reputation in the field of collaborative arts practice in Ireland and abroad. His experience and ambition make him very well placed to lead the work of Create nationally and internationally. The board and team are looking forward to working with Damien as he leads this next phase of the organisation’s development”.
Damien McGlynn commented on his appointment, stating “I’m absolutely delighted and honoured to be taking on the role of Director in such a critically important organisation in the Irish cultural sector. I’ve admired the work of Create ever since I was studying and I’m excited to build on that strong legacy and the outstanding work of Ailbhe and the team in recent years. I strongly believe in the transformative impact that Create, and the artists we support, can have in Irish society by leading and developing ambitious and innovative collaborative arts practice across Ireland.”
Damien McGlynn’s appointment sees him take on the position held by Dr Ailbhe Murphy since 2015. The board and executive wish to sincerely thank Ailbhe for her leadership, dedication and passion over the past eight years.
Damien will take on his new role as Director of Create from 12th September 2022.

The Hugh Lane Gallery and Create are delighted to announce this significant opportunity for a collaborative/ socially engaged artist(s) to embark on a major commission.
In keeping with both Hugh Lane Gallery and Create’s commitment to principles of equality, diversity and inclusion, we seek expressions of interest from artists who are from minority ethnic backgrounds and/ or have lived experience of displacement and/ or are shaped by histories of intergenerational migration. Candidates may self-identify as Traveller, Roma, refugee, migrant or otherwise through lived experience and/ or second generational memories. The commission is open to artists based in the Republic of Ireland.
The commission is aimed at professional artist(s) who are interested in developing or consolidating their collaborative/ socially engaged arts practice. Artist(s) should have a track record and experience of working in the field of collaborative/ socially engaged arts practice. The artist(s) should demonstrate the ability to connect to and read the complexities of the local area of Dublin city geographically within the Dublin City Council administrative area. We particularly welcome proposals which consider diverse ways to engage with both community and audience.

Create, Galway Arts Centre and Creative Places Tuam Artist Residency Award Recipient: Pavithra Kannan
We are delighted to announce Pavithra Kannan as the recipient of the Create, Galway Arts Centre and Creative Places Tuam Artist Residency Award. The residency will take place in September across both Galway Arts Centre and Creative Places Tuam, providing opportunities for research, exchange, networking, and learning, with additional curatorial advice from Galway Arts Centre.
Pavithra intends to use the time and support afforded by the residency to address specific environmental, social aesthetic and economic concerns within a located context involving aspects of time and space.

Create is pleased to announce an online information session on applying to the Artist in the Community (AIC) Scheme, with Áine Crowley, Programme Manager, Arts and Engagement, and artist William Bock, previous AIC Scheme award recipient.
The information session is about answering any questions you might have about making an application to the Scheme. It’s also about sharing experience of developing and delivering a collaborative project through the Scheme. If you are an artist or a community organisation interested in the Artist in the Community Scheme but don’t know where to start, come talk to us. The Hodder Fellowship will be given to artists and writers of exceptional promise to pursue independent projects at Princeton University during the academic year. Potential Hodder Fellows are composers, choreographers, performance artists, visual artists, writers, translators, or other kinds of artists or humanists who have “much more than ordinary intellectual and literary gifts”; they are selected more “for promise than for performance.”
Hodder Fellows spend an academic year at Princeton, but no formal teaching is involved. An 88,000 USD stipend is provided for this ten-month appointment as a Visiting Fellow. Fellowships are not intended to fund work leading to an advanced degree. One need not be a US citizen to apply.

Good Day Cork is thrilled to announce that their first multi-lingual collection of essays titled ‘Pathways’ will release on 20th August during Heritage Week 2022 at an in-person reading event at the Living Commons in Cork.
‘Pathways’ features essays in Urdu, Croatian, Spanish and Portuguese. The collection represents a multi-lingual contribution to environmental essays in Ireland, since it narrates an experience of walking in nature and the outdoors. The writers will read a passage from their essay in their native tongue along with English translation.

In 2021, the Baring Foundation published Love in a cold climate, a report which profiled inspiring examples of arts and creativity with older people in Finland.
Four creative ageing experts from Finland will be touring the UK and Ireland in the first week of September 2022 (5-9 September) to share their work, stopping in Dublin, Edinburgh, Cardiff and London. The focus of the events will be culture, arts and creativity in care homes, including how the social and arts sectors can work together. The Dublin event will take place on 5 September in the Finnish Ambassador’s Residence.

The Irish Humanities Alliance (IHA), in collaboration with Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) and The LAB, is delighted to present Streets Ahead: Post-Pandemic Civic Spaces. Today, as they plan for post-pandemic landscapes, with greater awareness and appreciation of the outdoors, the open-air spaces of our common world have renewed significance. Public places now need to function more effectively as truly shared spaces. Presenting current research from the fields of design, visual and material culture, public history, cultural history, architecture, urban planning, sonic studies, public art and heritage studies, this conference attempts to provide a critical lens through which to focus this newly enhanced attention.
