The Immigrant Council of Ireland in partnership with DCU are hosting a series of webinars (4 in total) on Diversity in Politics in Ireland, Migrants Voting & Running for elections; Women in Politics; Political Party Membership and How to Run a Successful Political campaign. These comprehensive webinars, taking place between March and April 2022, will be delivered by various local councillors and migrant leaders in Ireland. See more info and register here.
The African Professional Network of Ireland are hosting a Women In STEM #BreakTheBias event in collaboration with GALSTEM and META. This in person event will take place at 6pm on March 25th at the META Office, Ballsbridge. The panel discussion focussing on women in STEM (followed by a Q&A session, then a break out session) will promote a diverse group of women, highlight issues and create networking opportunities for students/graduates. The African Professional Network of Ireland encourage you to save the date for their Africa Day celebration on May 25th. The Lion’s Den Competition, a networking event and business competition organised in collaboration with leading organisations such as Dublin City Council, Dog Patch Labs and Meta. The initiative, taking place at 6.30pm at the Wood Quay venue, will promote black business and provide access to the support, capital and guidance needed to grow these businesses.
The National Youth Council of Ireland are seeking minority ethnic young people aged 15-25 with something to say about how the youth work sector can best support themselves and others from diverse cultural backgrounds. AkiDwA are hosting ‘It Takes a Village to Raise a Child’ online, a High Level – Round Table Discussion on Migrant Children of African Descent in State Care on Wednesday 30th of March from 11 am to 12.30 pm on Zoom. You can learn more and register here.
AkiDwA are also hosting a Strategic Plan 2022 – 2025 launch; ‘Moving Forward Together, Bigger & Better’. Highlighting their Mission to promote equality and justice for migrant women and address barriers to equal opportunities, this zoom meeting takes place on the 5th of April 2022 from 2 to 4pm. The African Advocacy Network Ireland (AANI) is hosting an International Adolescent health Week (IAHW) event about young people’s health and wellbeing. Taking place on Zoom on the 26th of March at 12pm, the programme will last approximately 1 hr and 30 minutes with a Q&A to conclude. The theme is “Transitions” – from childhood to adulthood, physically and mentally from a pre-pandemic life into a life shaped by a pandemic, from dependence to independence. You can submit questions prior to the event and learn more from the poster attached which includes the zoom meeting ID and password.
The JPIC committee of the Little Sisters of the Assumption, in collaboration with the Religious of the Assumption UK are hosting an online workshop on the topic of “Protections for people fleeing war, persecution, and the ravages of climate change” on Saturday 26th of March from 10am to 3.30pm. Courses/Training:
New Communities Partnership and Mi-WOW are holding a “Hiring for Diversity Training” which is designed with the aim of raising awareness around diversity, inclusion, and multiculturalism and the importance of including these values into recruitment processes. As a migrant organisation led by and for migrants, NCP have extensive experience of the challenges that migrant people in general, and migrant women in particular, face when trying to relaunch their careers in the country and enter the Irish workforce. Hr Professionals are invited to join this three-hour training delivered via Zoom for free. The first (for this year) training is scheduled for 31st of March at 10.30am and will be facilitated by Dr. Lucy Michael and Dr. Niloufar Omidi. The Public Interest Law Alliance (PILA) a project of FLAC are inviting colleagues in the NGO and Legal Sector (but open to all) to an online information session on the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD). The Economic & Social Research Institute are seeking to hire a European Migration Network (EMN) Information Officer who will lead the communication and dissemination of EMN Ireland/ESRI outputs across a range of channels. They will increase the visibility of EMN Ireland among key target groups, producing an annual Communications & Dissemination Strategy and Quarterly Action Plans, and co-ordinating their implementation. The successful candidate will be educated to degree level with a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, experience in managing a website and managing social media profiles in a professional capacity and proficiency in the use of a range of communications platforms and tools. The African Geographical Review (AGR), a leading international peer reviewed journal for geographical scholarship relating to Africa is seeking Associate Editors in Human Geography, Physical Geography and Geospatial roles. The associate editors will work with the Chief Editor on all aspects of the African Geographical Review on behalf of the African Speciality Group of the Association of American Geographers. The Associate Editors shall serve a 3-year term, and if interested and available, be re-appointed for a second 3-year term (for a maximum of 6-years). Associate Editors would have the opportunity to apply to become Chief Editor during their first or second term. Front-Line Defenders are seeking a French and English speaking Grants Coordinator for Sub-Saharan Africa. The salary range for this role begins at €36,340 annually and progressing forward in yearly increments. This will be agreed on appointment. All new appointments are subject to a probationary period of six months. The contract is based on a 35 hour week, Monday to Friday, based in the organisation’s headquarters in Dublin. The Institute of Antiracism and Black Studies (IABS) are conducting a brief survey to capture 21 actions to tackle racism in the workplace in Ireland as part of the observation of the International Day of the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21st. You can complete the survey in two minutes here (please do not share on social media to avoid inaccurate data from trolls).
The North West Migrant Forum working with in Derry organised a protest in Lifford on Sat 19th March to highlight their campaign on the Common Travel Area (CTA) agreement which discriminates against some residents of the Republic and Northern Ireland. They pointed out that the CTA also affects Ukrainian refugees but the limitations and discriminatory aspects of the CTA are often not understood. They are looking for endorsement from groups for the campaign – your group might consider supporting them if you can. The African American Irish Diaspora Network have shared an article about Sarah Parker Redmond, an American-born woman to two free Black parents, who travelled to Ireland on multiple occasions to speak up against slavery. She was a fierce proponent in the transatlantic abolitionist movement and spoke beside Fredrick Douglass many times. “It was a triumphant and accomplished performance, reminiscent of the appearances of Frederick Douglass two decades earlier. It was praised by all who heard it, including the Rev. Dr. Foley, Professor of Irish in Trinity College, who said that “his heart had been stirred within him by the language and sentiments of the splendid address they had heard from the lips of Miss Remond.’” You can read the article here.

The National Youth Council of Ireland have launched a new updated ‘8 Steps to Inclusive Youth Work’ resource to mark Anti-Racism Month. This resource will support youth workers to build responsive, diverse and inclusive youth settings as part of the fight against injustice and inequality in society. The resource includes tools and templates to support inclusive youth work, examples of inclusive practice from 16 organisations, a mini podcast series and a checklist of key indicators for assessing equality and inclusive youth work. Mother Tongues free online platform, Mother Tongues Families can help newcomer families to connect with families who speak their language and live nearby. There is an option to find families with children of the same age (0 – 12) too and to join a language group to receive notifications of events. If you know families who are looking to connect through their own mother tongue, please send them the description + link below. People have been using the app to organise picnics, visits to the library and other small social gathering for children, especially for preschoolers and primary school children. There are no ads and no promotions, of any kind, just families organising get together through different languages. The platform is free to join here.
Skein Press and Holy Show have announced an open call for Solstice Stories 2023. If you are a writer, poet or illustrator interested in getting published, you can send individual or collaborative proposals for fiction, non-fiction or poetry. They will commission up to four proposals for publication. Writers and artists, individually or as a group are welcome to apply by March 31st. Read guidelines here before applying here.
Funding:
The Irish Youth Foundation’s ‘Generation Pandemic Fund’ for 2022 is open to projects and programmes around the country as they work to undo the catastrophic damage the Covid-19 fallout has inflicted on our most excluded children and young people. The fund will support work aligned to one of their three focus areas for change – Education, Mental Wellbeing and Skills & Employability. There are two categories of funding available: Grassroots – grants of between €1,500 – €10,000 and Promising Programmes – grants of between €10,000 – €30,000.
